Life In The Spirit Seminar (LISS)

A Life in the Spirit Seminar Is . . .

  • People receiving Biblical teaching on who the Holy Spirit is and what the Spirit can do in their lives;
  • People having the opportunity to be filled with the Spirit;
  • People being empowered and gifted for ministry to the world;
  • People receiving powerful prayer ministry;
  • People experiencing the Holy Spirit’s touching their lives and changing them forever.  The Holy Spirit comes as an active participant in the weekend.

Description of the Seminar

“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” (Acts 19:2 NIV). Because of a lack of teaching, understanding and personal experience, many good church members would have to answer in the same way as the Ephesian disciples… “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” (v.3).

The Life in the Spirit Seminar is an exciting strategy designed to acquaint the participant with the person, the work, and the power of the Holy Spirit (the third person of the Trinity), using scripture and personal testimony. Every effort is made to see that the content is both scripturally balanced and Wesleyan in nature. The weekend is designed to heighten awareness of the Spirit of God working in our personal lives and in the life of the church, to remove any barriers the participants might have to the Holy Spirit moving in their lives, and to create a greater openness to the fullness of the Holy Spirit.

During the Life in the Spirit Seminar, the grace of God, the love of Jesus Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit become active in the worship, the short teachings, and the contagious testimonies of faith that are shared by team members. As a result, the participants discover the potential and the power of the Holy Spirit to lead, guide, and direct their lives into the fullness of Christ Jesus that God offers to every believer. Participants are encouraged and challenged to receive “the Promise of the Father” and to begin walking with Jesus in the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Seminar Overview

In the weekend model, the event begins on Friday evening (usually with a covered dish dinner) with worship, teaching on praise, and a small group experience led by team members. All sessions begin with 10-20 minutes of worship using a mix of familiar hymns and contemporary worship  choruses.

On Saturday morning, team members share on ten ministries of the Holy Spirit, (i.e., love, prayer, guidance). The afternoon teaching session centers around kingdom encounters in the book of Acts, as well as the gifts and fruit of the Spirit. On Saturday evening, the coordinator(s) share personal testimonies regarding the work of the Holy Spirit in their lives. The evening closes with an opportunity for participants to be filled with the Spirit and to receive prayer and personal ministry from team members.

Meals during the day on Saturday may be on-your-own or arranged by the church. The team normally takes responsibility for the morning worship on Sunday, with the coordinator preaching and team members leading in worship and liturgy. During the church school hour, team members are available to teach or share in adult/youth classes with advanced notice.

The schedule for the Life in the Spirit Seminar is extremely flexible.  It may be held as a one day event and may also be custom designed for the needs of your local church.

Although this seminar is most often done for individual local churches, it has been done for clusters, districts, annual conferences, retreats, in prisons and in a number of international settings.

Other Information

Expense to the Church

The church will be responsible for a non-refundable registration fee of $175* which includes the local church preparation materials. The church is also asked to help with the LISS coordinator’s and worship leader’s travel expenses. There is a $250 honorarium for the coordinator and a $150 honorarium for the worship leader.  During the weekend the church agrees to take up a love offering or to make a contribution to ARM for future Life in the Spirit Seminars. Churches are further encouraged to make ARM a part of the church's annual mission budget.

The rest of the team members travel at their own expense to live for the weekend with members of the congregation.  The church needs to provide meals and suitable housing for the team.

The Life in the Spirit Seminar manual costs $12 and is available in English and Spanish versions. Each adult participant will need a manual. Many churches charge a $15-$20 registration fee to help defray the expense of the manuals.  Others prefer to fund this cost from the church budget.  A book table of resources for purchase is also available upon request.

*Registration fees are reviewed and subject to change in January of each year.

Life In The Spirit Seminar Leadership

The leadership team is made up of a visiting coordinator (often a couple) and several team members. The coordinators are persons who are committed to fulfilling the Great Commission by the sharing of their faith in Jesus Christ for the encouragement of the body of Christ and for the renewal of the church. They are persons who believe that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever [Heb 13:8].  They expect to see the Holy Spirit move today as he did in the Gospels and in Acts. Coordinators are carefully selected by ARM.

Team members are prayerfully selected because of their openness and willingness to share their experiences as they learn to walk more closely with Jesus and allow themselves to be led and used by the Holy Spirit.

Team members may provide programming for your church’s youth throughout the weekend.

The visiting coordinator works closely with the pastor and general chairperson of the local church in preparing for the weekend.
