Life in the Spirit Seminar and Life in the Spirit Experience

The Life in the Spirit Seminar (LISS) has been the staple of ARM’s local church renewal events since 1989. Since the development by Gary Moore in a local church in Texas, the LISS has occurred in local churches, church clusters, and districts in the USA and around the world. In 2009 there were events in Nepal, Peru, and England.

This event is designed to show the power of the Holy Spirit for Christians in their daily walk. The LISS team-led event shares scripture, testimony, and prayer for participants to be baptized in the Holy Spirit as a second work of grace.

The LISS has remained basically unchanged since being birthed in First UMC Bedford as a Sunday school class.

An evolution of this ministry has resulted from adding more participant interaction to the event. The LISE (Life in the Spirit Experience) carries over the basic teaching from the initial format and adds experiences for participants. The new format reduces the amount of teaching and increases the time for ministry. Although each LISS and LISE is customized by the Holy Spirit, the basic format of the evolving event includes an equal amount of teaching and ministry.

A typical LISE would include about 10 teaching segments with each segment followed by an interaction. Examples of interaction may include personal reflection or listening by the participants, prayer ministry facilitated by team members, or ministry by participants to one another. There is no defined interaction coming into the event or prior to each teaching. Members of the team respond to the guidance of the Holy Spirit for instruction and direction. Team members trust that the Holy Spirit will respond. If the Holy Spirit does not give clear direction, no interaction for that specific teaching is used.

If this renewal event sounds exciting for your local church, either in the LISS or LISE format, please contact Frank Billman for more information on how to schedule an event.

Lay Speakers Trained As Lay Witnesses

Ever since ARM received the Lay Witness Mission program from the General Board of Discipleship in 2004 we have been providing Lay Witness team member training to enlarge the pool of witnesses available to coordinators leading missions.

Ava Williams, an ARM advisory council member, is the Conference Director of Lay Speaking for the Illinois Great Rivers (IGR) annual conference.  She came up with the idea of providing Lay Witness team member training as an advanced lay speaker training course.  Frank and Peggi Billman from the ARM office and Jack and Tina Stodgell, LWM coordinators, drove to southern Illinois to provide this training.

Also attending that training was Sandy Jackson, head of Lay Speaking Ministries for the General Board of Discipleship.  Ava’s training session was a pilot project that Sandy was observing before she advertises this training nationally as an approved advanced course for lay speakers across the country.  Sandy has invited Frank Billman to come to Philadelphia in January to participate in a national meeting of Conference Directors of Lay Speaking where he will share about this new offering of Lay Witness team training for Lay Speakers.

Testimonies from those attending the training were positive and encouraging:

“I came here thinking I would get a little out of this – then the Holy Spirit took over and what a wonderful weekend. Sharing our lives was great and amazing how so many times we were struggling or experiencing the same things as others. We were able to share our lives knowing it was God who brought us together. God is good!”

“I met God AGAIN & AGAIN and AGAIN – fell in love with Jesus all over.”

“My heart was touched & moved, & I believe God is going to use this Lay Witness Mission ministry in our Parish to bring spiritual revival & renewal. God bless you!”

Ava has another Lay Witness team member training scheduled for Lay Speakers in the IGR annual conference to be held in Bloomington, IL April 23-24.

Water in the Wilderness for Minister and Spouses

Spiritual leadership can be wearying.  Couples involved in ministry need times away for intentional renewal and refreshment.  But where can you find a renewal event that is not cost prohibitive or does not involve a significant sacrifice of time?

The ARM Minister and Spouse Retreat is one such opportunity.  In Isaiah 43:20, God promises to “give water in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, to give drink…”  The experience of hosting thirteen of these retreats gives us the confidence to say that God faithfully fulfills that promise at this renewal event.

Taking place the week immediately following Easter, the event begins on Tuesday afternoon and ends on Friday at noon.  Sessions are filled with worship through song, prayer, interaction and sharing from couples seasoned in navigating the challenges of marriage and ministry.  Sessions address the topics of renewing our relationship with Christ, rekindling the spark in marriage relationships and in reclaiming God’s power source to minister in the character of Christ.

For a registration fee of $199, couples are treated to three nights at a hotel that includes a hot breakfast.  Catered lunches and dinners are also provided as well a gift certificate to a local restaurant for a “date night” during the event.

Are you a married couple involved in ministry desperate for some time away?  This retreat would be a great opportunity for renewal.

Perhaps you know a ministry couple who needs a break.  Purchase a registration as a gift.  Because attendees travel to and from the retreat at their own expense, and because childcare is not provided at the retreat, making arrangements for those expenses would multiply the blessing.

Registration is limited to the first 24 couples on a first-come, first served basis.  After 24 couples are registered, ARM creates a waiting list with the understanding that couples in ministry often have unexpected emergencies that require cancellation.

Worship in Spirit and Truth Manual Printed

Piloted in April of 2005, the Worship in Spirit and Truth Seminar (WIST) has been refined in a 4 ½  year process culminating in the first official printing of the WIST Participant’s Manual.  This 46-page resource allows for ample space to take notes and includes a recommended resource list, additional Scriptures for study and numerous reflection questions.  While the central theme of Biblical Worship remains unchanged, a team that has included Martha Daigneau, Jeanne Martin, Rev. Sally Havens and Ann Peat has edited, refined and reworked the document using additional feedback from WIST participants over these four years.

The WIST is intentionally designed to avoid “Worship Wars” language as well as labels such as “Traditional,” “Contemporary” and “Blended.”  The focus is on what the Bible has to say about worship: Who Do We Worship, Why Do We Worship?  When Do We Worship?  How Do We Worship?  The weekend also includes opportunities for small group interaction, hands-on expressions of worship and time for personal response and reflection.

If you are looking for a renewal event that God has used to take people’s focus off of “personal preference” and onto the wonderfully diverse Biblical expressions of worship, this is a great event to consider!  This also would be a great resource for a Sunday School class curriculum or even a Bible Study for your choir or praise team.  For more information contact the ARM office at 1-877-857-9372 or via info@aldersgaterenewal.org.

Team Members at Aldersgate

Team members from all of our local church renewal events are encouraged to attend the annual Aldersgate conference which will be held this year July 14-18 at Charleston, West Virginia. This family conference is a great time of fellowship, learning, growth, ministry, impartation, and refreshment.  When you have given so much on weekends to others, you need to take some time for God to refill you!  Go to www.Aldersgate2010.org for all the information.

Team Members as Ambassadors

If you have seen God change lives through the Lay Witness Mission, Life in the Spirit Seminar, Lord Teach Us to Pray or other Aldersgate Renewal Ministries local church renewal events, we encourage you to become ambassadors for that event. We can supply you with brochures to share with pastors and churches. Testimony of your personal experience with the event is a great way to get the word out!
