Aldersgate 2010 Report by Rev. Dr. Frank Billman

ald2010_1Based on God’s promise in Isaiah 44:3, the theme for Aldersgate 2010 was “Unleashed.” Executive Director, Jonathan Dow, said of the conference, “Prior to the conference, God lovingly challenged us to recognize that if we ask an infinite God to be ‘unleashed’ in our lives, the reality is that He may choose to answer our prayers at the conference in a way that goes beyond our finite comprehension, understanding and experience.  I believe He did so.”

Numbers of attendees testified that the power and presence of God were noticeably “kicked up a notch,” as Chef Emeril would say.  A lay couple from Michigan commented: “We came away greatly encouraged.  This event has given new meaning to the word Renewal!” Another wrote:  “I came dry and empty.  I leave filled and refreshed.  This is my first Aldersgate and I am amazed by the unleashing of the Holy Spirit on his people.  I have never experienced church like this!”

Aldersgate 2010 was held in Charleston, WV July 14-18.  The more than 1380 registrations reflected an increase of 24% for the adults and 25% for the youth at The Gate youth conference from the previous year.

ald2010_2Over 300 people joined together for Pre-Conference around the theme of Moving in the Miraculous – prepared, equipped, and released.  One highlight was the number of prophetic words, 23 in all, that were shared during intentional seasons of listening and inviting God’s presence.  Participants were refreshed and equipped to receive from the Lord.

Bishop Ernest Lyght welcomed Aldersgate 2010 to the West Virginia Area annual conference. Bishop James Swanson of the Holston annual conference attended the entire conference with his wife and preached at the Sunday morning Holy Communion service.  United Methodist clergy, Rev. Terry Teykl, Rev. Candace Lewis and Rev. Stephen Handy also spoke at the conference.

New this year was an opportunity for 15-minute appointments for people to receive healing prayer or personal prophetic words.  The available time slots were filled before the main conference even began!  Also new was a young adult artist who painted as the Spirit directed her during worship.  She completed two paintings during the conference.

For the first time, the GBOD offered advanced Lay Speaker credit for Lay Speakers attending a prescribed track of conference sessions.  Over 60 Lay Speakers took advantage of this new opportunity.  During his keynote, Rev. Randy Clark, who was used by God to spark the revival at Toronto, invited people who needed healing to stand and then asked people around them to lay hands on them and pray for their healing.  More than 130 people testified that it was their first time to pray for someone who was then immediately healed.

ald2010_3In response to the question “How has the conference helped you in your spiritual journey?” a pastor from PA wrote: “Renewal, Revival, Equipping, Empowering, New Determination, New Vision,  More anointing!”  From a pastor in NC: “To be able to see and experience the presence of the Holy Spirit among so many other United Methodists is so very encouraging to me as an United Methodist minister.”  Since the conference, testimony from clergy reflects the fresh impartation for ministry they received at the conference.

Aldersgate 2011 and The Gate 2011 will be held July 27-31, 2011 in Dayton, Ohio.  Bishop Bruce Ough has graciously welcomed the conference into the West Ohio annual conference.  601 people have already registered. The Gate Conference by Kourtney Brownlow

gategroupshotThis has been an exciting year thus far for The Gate youth ministry.  The 2010 Gate Annual Youth Conference was a huge success and God continues to move throughout this ministry in a number of ways.  One of the areas of ministry outside of the Annual Youth Conference that we are really excited about is our Mini-Gates.  A Mini-Gate is a one night youth rally hosted by a local church for an evening of worship, preaching and renewal.

gate2010_1 gate2010_2

On August 29th we held our first Mini-Gate (post Aldersgate 2010) in partnership with Cook’s United Methodist Church in Mt. Juliet, TN.  Twelve Ounce Jar led us in worship and Rev. Charles Welchance (keynote speaker for 2011) brought the message.   There were over 180 young people in attendance for this event and it was a powerful night of ministry.  It is the hope of the youth ministry of the TN Annual Conference to host a Mini-Gate in every district this year!  The word is getting out about what God is doing with the youth ministry of Aldersgate Renewal Ministries – and the Gate is becoming a recognizable name among United Methodist Churches.  Please continue to be in prayer for what God is doing amongst this generation of young people through the vessel of ARM as we prepare for the 2011 Conference where we are ready to be Devastated by His Love and Ruined for the Ordinary.

Aldersgate Conference Children's Ministry by Jocelyn Everson

cm1Picture this...a room full of kids standing shoulder to shoulder (well, maybe there’s a little jumping), hands in the air reaching to Heaven, voices singing as loud as possible, “Jesus, You’re the only that I could live for!”  What about watching groups of kids intercede for the sick, the lost, and the hurting?

Imagine hearing a young child say to you, “God talked to me!”

Sound like a glimpse of Heaven?  Trust me, it felt like Heaven as the Children’s Ministry Team served and sat in Jesus’ presence among these kids at Aldersgate 2010.  Together we worshiped, we prayed, we grew, and we experienced joy in abundance.  It was an incredible blessing to see a new generation that God is raising up to bring honor and glory to His name.
cm2As we begin preparing for Aldersgate 2011, we would covet your prayers for the Children’s Ministry.  Please pray for the leadership in planning, dreaming, and listening for God’s leading.  Pray for the kids and families who will be involved, that God would lead even more to our ministry.  Pray for this generation of young ones that God would give them a spirit of wisdom and revelation that they may know him better and understand his incomparably  great power for those who believe.

May all of us learn to love and worship as Jesus calls us to…as children.  May we abandon all that hinders us from the simple faith that can move mountains.  God is moving among His children, literally.  Thanks be to God for the opportunity to watch what He is doing!

Local Church Renewal Event Promo CD's Available

At Aldersgate ’07 there were equipping sessions offered to give people a taste of what the Worship in Spirit and Truth, Lord Teach Us to Pray, and Life in the Spirit Seminars are like.  These CD’s can be a useful tool to share with a church that might be interested in having one of the seminars.  [We already had one for Lay Witness Mission.]  You can obtain these for free from the ARM office.

Annual Conference Supports LWM

At the 2010 session of the Greater New Jersey annual conference a resolution was presented and passed that expects each church in that annual conference to host a Lay Witness Mission within the next 4 years.  The first of those requests has already arrived in our office for a mission in February.

Richard Rhodes Is Going To Jail!

Life in the Spirit Seminar coordinator Richard Rhodes will be going to the Greenville Correctional Center in Jarratt, VA in March, but we fully expect him to be released!  ARM has been invited by Chaplain Paul Beighley to send a team to lead a Life in the Spirit Seminar there in the prison.  The Lay Witness Mission, Lord Teach Us To Pray and Life in the Spirit Seminars have all been done in prisons before.  Chaplain Beighley has also invited Jonathan Dow to bring the Worship in Spirit and Truth Seminar to his prison next September.  They expect around 70 participants—a truly captive audience!

LWM Team Member Trainings Continue

Several Lay Witness Mission team member trainings have been held this year and more are being planned.  In April a training was held in Bloomington, IL , and another was held in August in Georgia especially for Lay Speakers.  Lay Speakers can now receive advanced credit for taking this training.  St. Mark UMC in Northport, AL hosted a LWM earlier this year and as part of their follow-up they agreed to host a LWM team member training this September.  Hewett Memorial UMC in Albertville, AL also hosted a LWM earlier this year and they, too, will be hosting a team member training at their church in November for people in their church and others from their district.  We expect to reap over 75 new witnesses this year as a result of these trainings.  Some of the newly trained witnesses have already been used on teams this year.  Another LWM team training for Lay Speakers may be held in the Illinois Great Rivers Conference next year.  If you would like to host a team member training for any of our local church renewal events give the ARM office a call.

Advent Is Coming!

Looking for an exciting way to enhance your celebration of Advent?  ARM introduced a new resource at Aldersgate that will encourage your small group and your church.  Check out Encountering God in our Celebrations of the Church Year on the ARM website. Each four week Bible study is designed with an emphasis on being transformed by God’s presence as we encounter God in prayer and worship.  Our prayer is that God will use this resource to bring you into a deeper intimacy with God personally and to empower your church with Spirit-led prayer and worship for Advent, Lent, Pentecost and Kingdomtide.  Designed to be used personally or corporately, the CD format makes it easy for you to print and use just the sections for Advent.
